History of the Fund

Ever since the United States officially apologized and made reparations to the people who were wrongly uprooted from their homes and interned in concentration camps, several people have been eager to find a way to express their gratitude to the Woodwards.

As far back as the early 1990s money has been donated and kept in a separate Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC) account for the purpose of creating a lasting memorial in their honor.  There have been several attempts in the past to get the Fund off the ground, each one ending with a feeling that this work would be beyond the talents and energies this community could muster.  But, this time is different!  This time it will become reality.

Walt’s passing has brought an infusion of donations from a diverse group of people, all wanting to see the work of the Woodwards carried on, and the principles, the lessons and sacrifices remembered and passed on to future generations.
